1986-2005: Director of the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI) (now James Hutton Institute), a Non-Departmental Public Body, introducing plant biotechnology, metabolomics, genomics, bioinformatics, natural-abundance stable-isotope discrimination studies, GC-MS, EPR, NMR imaging, gene-flow studies, recombinant0antibody diagnostics, non-linear mathematics, and lipid analysis to research portfolio and publishing the Global Overviews in the SCRI Annual Report series

Responsible for Biomathematics & Statistics Scotland based in the University of Edinburgh

1989-2005: Deputy Chairman and Founder of Mylnefield Research Services Ltd. the commercial arm of SCRI, one of the earliest commercial arms of UK research institutes and uniquely established and operated without public- or private-sector subsidies
